Hundreds gathered near the reflection pool in front the Lincoln Memorial on Sept 23 to mourn the death of Mahsa Amini — a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman detained by Iran’s “moral police" for supposedly violating country’s ultraconservative dress code.
Amini was reportedly beaten repeatedly during the detention. The skull CT scan of Amini shows skull fractures by severe blows to the head, proving that the Iranian police’s claim that she suffered a heart attack was untrue.
Amini’s death sparked uprisings and protests across the nation as well as around the world. People are demanding justice for Mahsa Amini, whilel calling for the abolition of the compulsory Hijab, or head covering. Some women have taken off their hijabs in public, which is a punishable act in Iran, or have gone further by burning them or publicly cutting their hair.
Iranians are also experiencing widespread internet outages, including several complete nation-wide blackouts. The United States Department of Treasury announced on Sept 23 that it will issue new licenses to help expand internet access to Iranian people. Meanwhile, violent crackdowns have continued. The death toll is still on the rise (Sept 23).
Protests around Iran are chanting “death to the dictator” and “I will kill the one who killed my sister”.
